Goodbye 2009!

Quick pictoral recap of Monday’s Neon Indian show featuring Yeahdef, Fizzy Dino Pop, and Ishi brought to you by Ben Smithson, check out his Flickr for more photos from the event. I was planning on writing something more in depth up, but getting sick got the better of me.

Fizzy Dino Pop @ Granada
FIzzy Dino Pop performing his latest music accompanied by a video mashup of Jurassic Park, Tron, Bill and Ted, and more. He just released a free single as well, scroll down to check out a track from the single and to download the single for free!

Ishi [MySpace] took the stage right before Neon Indian and got the crowd into the party mood. I hear it was their first time to play in front of a crowd as large as the one on Monday night, but had I not heard that I would have never questioned it.

Neon Indian @ the Granda
Finishing up the night, of course, was Neon Indian. Having just returned from globetrotting and spreading their music, they put on a great show. Neon Indian has a new album out now on both CD and vinyl. You can get their new album at one of their live shows (next local show @ Hailey’s in Denton on Janurary 30) or you can get it through Amazon. I picked up a vinyl copy at the Granada show.

Fizzy Dino Pop – Space

I also got an email on Monday from Marcus D with a new beat that he is releasing for free. I’ve been a fan of Marcus D since a little before his first CD was released. Not only does he have solid production skills, but he has also teamed up with the likes of Substantial on several occasions.

Have a good new year everyone and I’ll see you back here in 2010.

Fab Deuce – Deuce Knuckle CD Release

Last night was the Fab Deuce CD release party at Hailey’s in Denton. We showed up right before Parable Paul went on so we got to catch Parable Paul, Vortexas, and Fab Deuce. I meant to grab my camera before I headed out, but as you can see by the picture quality I didn’t. Enjoy the technological beauty of cell phone pictures and meet me down below.

I’ve already talked a bit about Fab Deuce before when I told you about the show, so I’ll just send you over to the Fab Deuce MySpace to get a dose of more music and more information if you want it. I also included two tracks from their new album below which they put out for free. I could go on and on about how much I like Deuce Knuckle, but I’ll let the music speak for itself. Download the two songs below for free here.

Fab Deuce – No Good

What surprised me the most? A guy from Tucson, AZ, Parable Paul. He had a great vibe going with his set and all of the production behind him was straight out of the 90s. I wasn’t able to dig up any free tracks from Parable Paul, but I did come across a track by Habeas Corpus that features Parable Paul and Pudge. Give it a listen, but make sure to stop by Parable Paul’s MySpace to hear some of his tracks. After last night at Hailey’s I can say I’m an instant fan.

Random other bits: DDR CAR, WTF!?
DDR Car
I’m just minding my own business on 121 and this masterpiece of a Sentra creeps by. I posted it on Twitter and someone apparently knows who the owner of that car is. I’ll have to follow up on that one.

Tomorrow: Neon Indian with Ishi, Fizzy Dino Pop, and Yeahdef at the Granada Theater in Dallas.

Snow on Christmas Eve

I woke up today at 1 PM (the ONLY time to wake up in my book) and found that it was snowing outside. This is Dallas, snow is like spraying a can of Raid all over the city to these people. At first it wasn’t sticking and people were simply driving slow and terrible for no reason, but once five rolled around the snow was sticking pretty well to the ground. I got back to my place around six and snapped some pictures of the snow around the complex.

Then after pictures I kicked my shoes off in a fit of wet-cold rage, fixed my back door, rolled up my wet pant legs and put on one of the Dethklok albums that I got for Christmas from my awesome girlfriend. I don’t know if this is a common problem, but Dethalbum is very very quiet, I have to gain it all the way and it still doesn’t hit the 0 on my mixer. Dethalbum II is fine, but not quite sure why Dethalbum is so quiet.

Merry Christmas, happy holidays, all of that. If you need something to listen to while you sip on a warm or alcoholic beverage this Christmas Eve then check out the GoodGroove Podcast #3, included below for your listening enjoyment.

CPS-III Backup Battery Replacement

Every three years the CPS-III game cartridges have to get new backup batteries or else you risk the battery dying. What happens when the battery dies? The battery powering the hash table on the cartridge that unlocks the game dies and the hash is erased, making your game unplayable and turning a piece of arcade hardware into a big paperweight. It’s original purpose was to prevent piracy, but I don’t see how it helped to curb piracy myself. What you’re supposed to do is send your cartridge in to Capcom and they take it apart, replace the batter, and send it back to you. Well the game is pretty dated now and what are individual owners supposed to do? In my case my 3rd Strike cartridge was specially modified by a previous owner to make changing out the batteries a snap, literally.

Step 1: Pick up a new 1/2 AA battery. Radioshack carries them, even though the employees at the store weren’t aware of their existence.
step 1

Step 2: Power on the machine and allow it to finish booting up.
step 2

Step 3: Locate old backup battery on the CPS-III game cartridge.
step 3

Step 4: Remove the old backup battery with a small flathead screwdriver.
step 4

Step 5: Pop new battery into place, making sure you use the same +/- orientation as the last backup battery.
step 5

There you go, I’m good for another three years. Speaking of three years, I can’t believe it’s been three years since I picked this machine up and brought it back into working order. You can check all that action out from early 2007 right here. Thanks to the dedicated mod and arcade cab community. The original battery swap involved the same battery, but you had to solder positive and negative leads into place on the cartridge. I have no idea how common this snap-on battery modification is, but it squashes a lot of headaches for sure.

Double Gigging ‘n’ Show Going

Friday night I played the office holiday party and a friend’s thirtieth birthday party with Captain Kronik (Jason), another DJ I work with who has opened for Chew Fu before and still rocks 100% vinyl. I’ve only turned up a handful of pictures from the holiday party that ran from 6:30 to 11:00, but I’m working on finding pictures from the party that ran from 12:00 to 4:00 immediately following the holiday party. Direct your eyes below.

Putting on headphones
This is how I look when I put on my headphones while staring at my Serato library. I look like I’ve never put headphones on my head before.

Sound testing
Sound test time. Have to make sure everything sounds good before the real thing starts. Although not even the initial testing saved us from from the massive microphone feedback someone caught later in the night when they cut the music to run the raffle.

Warm up with Jason plus people dancing
Still technically not party time, but some people actually arrive to a party on time. These are those brave few. Not only have they arrived, they’re enjoying some pre-game tunes Jason. Also, take note of the mono setup. Am I too lazy to carry the second speaker? For such a small venue, yes.

I had everyone out on the floor later in the night, but there aren’t any pictures from that. Video exists, but I’m not exactly sure if they all would be cool with me putting that out in the open. If it shows up on Facebook without a fuss then I’m going to cross-post it here.

Playing with Jason was great, we had all the technology bases covered: Vinyl, CD, MP3. We had music blaring all night long with only minimal equipment damage (one of Jason’s turntable covers got stepped on and a small piece snapped off of one of the sides) and, surprisingly, without too many drunk people wanting to attempt to scratch and with no drunk people spilling any alcohol near or on the gear. The less my gear smells of old, dry alcohol the better.

Hey you! December 28th the Granada Theater has got Neon Indian, Ishi, Fizzy Dino Pop, and Yeahdef. It only costs $10 to stand in their presence or $14 to sit (or stand on your chair). Get out there to celebrate the end of the holidays and to pre-party for new year’s. As has been the norm lately I’ll hit you with some good tunes below.

Neon Indian [MySpace] – Listen to the remix work by Neon Indian and then get the urge to buy tickets to the show. If that doesn’t push you far enough to part with $10 then just go back a little and find the work of Fizzy Dino Pop. If that still doesn’t make you go then something is wrong with you. Download the track.

Shirobon [MySpace] – This guy followed me on twitter and I loved his music. I dug up a free track that he had out this time last year to give you guys something to listen to. Much newer stuff is up on his MySpace so be sure to check that as well. Download the track.
